When it comes to valves, there are many types that can be used in different ways. One particular type of valve would be a butterfly valve. The valve is intended for use in large pipes and is described as a disc rotating on the diameter axis inside the pipe, also serving as a throttle or damper. A butterfly valve is a device that controls flow and is typically used to apply a fluid that will flow through a portion of the pipe. The valve is similar to a ball valve (for operation). A butterfly valve having a flat circular plate is positioned in the center of the tube and has a rod passing therethrough which is attached to a handle on the outside of the valve. The valve operates by rotating the handle and rotating the plate in a parallel position or perpendicular to the flow direction. Unlike ball valves, the plates in a butterfly valve are always in flow; therefore, despite the valve position, a pressure drop is always caused in the flow.

There are three different types of butterfly valves. High performance butterfly valves are typically double eccentric in design and operate at pressures up to 725 PSI. The second type is a resilient butterfly valve having a flexible rubber seat. This type of pressure can be up to 232 PSI. Finally, the last type is a three-way butterfly valve, which is typically designed with a metal seat. The valve operates at pressures up to 1450 PSI.
