There are three different types of butterfly valves. High performance butterfly valves are typically double eccentric in design and operate at pressures up to 725 PSI. The second type is a resilient butterfly valve having a flexible rubber seat. This type of pressure can be up to 232 PSI. Finally, the last type is a three-way butterfly valve, which is typically designed with a metal seat. The valve operates at pressures up to 1450 PSI.

There are also several types of butterfly valves on the market. Wafer valves will be the most common because people who order this do not even say the word "wafer" but still get the butterfly valve they want. This type is a plastic butterfly valve that has two types, wafers and lugs. On the other hand, the lug valve has a metal insert disposed in the bolt hole of the valve. These inserts are threaded at both ends, which allows them to use only two bolts rather than using a nut to position in a particular system. Also known as a butterfly damper, which simply controls the flow rate by using a disc through a particular port.
